Giants GM Dave Gettleman amid odd offseason: Talent isn't everything - New York Post

One of Dave Gettleman’s mantras is, “You do not quit on talent.”

But ahead of next week’s NFL draft, the Giants general manager suggested it’s overrated.

“Roster building is not just about acquiring talent, but about finding players who fit athletically, intellectually and culturally with what you’re trying to accomplish,” Gettleman said Thursday afternoon from MetLife Stadium.

Gettleman added, in regards to the team’s ever-growing need to find Eli Manning’s heir in the coming days, that, “You’ve got to have a mental toughness to play the position here in New York.”

The second-year GM’s comments also could have been taken as an explanation of the trade of Odell Beckham Jr., who Gettleman stunningly shipped to the Cleveland Browns over the offseason.

While no one could question Beckham’s production, which turned him into a three-time Pro Bowler entering his age-26 season, there were plenty of questions about his character and ability to lead off the gridiron.

Sign up for the Starting Lineup newsletter and submit your NFL draft questions. We’ll answer our favorites weekly until the draft.

“Obviously there’s a lot of stuff that factors in, but at the end of the day, in order for us to move Odell, the other team was going to have to knock it out of the park,” Gettleman said last month. “We were not actively shopping him.”

Chalk Talk: What's toughest part of schedule? - ChicagoBears.com

I’m not surprised that the Bears are scheduled to play five night games this coming season. I was wondering whether a sixth could be added. What’s the most a team can have?
Michael P.
Oswego, Illinois

The most prime-time appearances an NFL team can make in a season is six, so one of six Sunday afternoon games the Bears currently have over the final 11 weeks of the season could be flexed to a Sunday night. Conversely, their scheduled Sunday night games against the Rams Nov. 17 in Los Angeles and versus the Chiefs Dec. 22 in Chicago could be moved back to a Sunday afternoon timeslot if the NFL thinks there’s a more intriguing matchup for primetime. Interesting, the Bears-Raiders game in London starts at 6 p.m. London time, but it’s not considered a night game because it kicks off at noon Chicago time.

When was the last time the Bears played on Thanksgiving in back-to-back seasons?
Paul J.
Lindenhurst, Illinois

The Bears last played Thanksgiving games in consecutive years in 2014-15, losing to the Lions 34-17 and beating the Packers 17-13. This will be the first time they’ve played Thanksgiving games against the Lions in back-to-back years since 1979-80 when they lost 20-9 and won 23-17 in overtime.

Which team is the new Stanley Cup favorite? - ESPN

The Tampa Bay Lightning were sent home in four games, so the overwhelming favorite entering the 2019 Stanley Cup playoffs is now out of the conversation. That makes the path to Lord Stanley a little easier for the other contenders.

Who emerges as the new top dog? Our team chimes in:

With the Lightning eliminated, who's the Stanley Cup favorite now?

Greg Wyshynski, senior NHL writer: Interesting question. "With the Lightning eliminated..." Hmmm, now, which team was the catalyst for such an odd query? Oh, that's right: The burgeoning juggernaut known as the Columbus Blue Jackets.

This isn't about the sweep of the Lightning. This is about the past 12 games since the Jackets cleared toxicity from their dressing room with a team meeting during a Western Canadian road trip. They've won 11 of those 12, giving up two or fewer goals in nine of them. They have elite offensive talents in Artemi Panarin (87 points), Cam Atkinson (41 goals) and Matt Duchene (7 points vs. Tampa). They have young standouts like Pierre-Luc Dubois and Josh Anderson. They've got the kind of franchise defenseman every Cup winner seems to have in Seth Jones. They have a bunch of Nick Foligno types. And if the first round is any indication, one of the best regular-season goalies (Sergei Bobrovsky) might have finally figured out this playoff thing.

No, I don't think they're going to crank a power play at 50 percent, nor will they be able to sneak up on anyone going forward. But I'm willing to buy that a team that hovered around the top 10 in most metrics this season, dramatically improved itself at the trade deadline and put together an incredible three weeks can keep this going. Sound the cannon. This might turn out to be something special. (Or it's me once again hoping that Jarmo Kekalainen is ultimately rewarded for shooting his shot.)

Emily Kaplan, national NHL reporter: The Washington Capitals. It's cheap to pick the reigning champs, but since the first round has been absolutely unpredictable, we have to revert back to some logical wisdom. And logical wisdom tells us that the team with an easy path typically ends up in the Stanley Cup Final. Two of the Capitals' biggest threats, the Pittsburgh Penguins and Lightning, are already eliminated. The Boston Bruins are scary, but they'll likely end up in a seven-game slugfest with the Toronto Maple Leafs, which could wear them out. The Carolina Hurricanes showed swagger by getting a big home win to pull the series to 2-1, but now they're without two of their top six forwards for the foreseeable future; the Capitals should be able to prey. To get past the next round, of course, the Caps would need to go through their old coach, Barry Trotz. It would be tricky, but the Caps have more offensive firepower and the ability to break open games. That could crack New York's stifling defensive structure.

Chris Peters, NHL draft and prospects writer: The Vegas Golden Knights. The depth, the goaltending, the unstoppable Mark Stone. There's a lot to like there. They can play any way that's needed: Fast, heavy, tough, finesse -- whatever, they've got the personnel to do it. Stone, Max Pacioretty and Paul Stastny have been incredible to start the series and show no signs of slowing down. The pucks are going in for those guys at an alarming rate. You can't expect it to be that easy going forward, but that's when you could see others like William Karlsson and Reilly Smith step things up. There are some moderate concerns about the team's depth, but it is not an issue at this point with how well Stone's line has played. Nashville looks like their biggest threat to me, despite being on the wrong end of Wednesday night in Dallas. After seeing what Columbus did to Tampa Bay, however, it suddenly feels like anything could happen now.

Dimitri Filipovic, hockey analytics writer: The Vegas Golden Knights. Heading into the postseason, when we were all filling out our brackets, there was some understandable apprehension in picking them to go far purely because of the brutal road map that faced them. It looked like they'd most likely have to go on the road against both the San Jose Sharks and then the Calgary Flames, whom you could argue were the two scariest opponents in the entire conference. But over the course of the past week or so, that path has really started to clear out for them.

Most importantly, they've taken care of their own business, bouncing back to thoroughly thrash San Jose since dropping the opening game of the series. The Knights have continued where they left off in the regular season, dominating at 5-on-5 by controlling 54.2 percent of the shot attempts and 58.6 percent of the high-danger chances and outscoring the Sharks 10-4. Quickly looking over at the other end of the bracket, Calgary is having a much tougher time than most anticipated against the Colorado Avalanche in its own opening-round matchup. Even if it finds a way to eventually squeeze past them, Colorado has laid out the blueprint for how to beat the Flames. That very plan perfectly meshes with what Vegas does best, which is using their team speed to create chances off the rush. Just like that, the likelihood of a repeat run suddenly looks more and more feasible with each passing day.

Sachin Chandan, ESPN the Magazine researcher: How about the New York Islanders? Goalie Robin Lehner is saving 95.4 percent of shots faced, the second-best rate since 1968. It gets even better in high-danger chances, with a save percentage of .962. After winning Game 1 in overtime, the Isles had to come back against the Penguins three times, answering quickly in Games 2, 3 and 4. The Penguins only led for 4:43 of the series. Less than five minutes. Matt Barzal was a wizard at setting up scoring chances with five assists, and he set up Jordan Eberle three times. The top three lines have scored timely goals for this team. There are still flaws, such as a 43.7 Corsi Close percentage and 17 penalties committed, but having the hottest goalie in the playoffs can get you pretty far (2018 Marc-Andre Fleury?). And all this without mentioning their Cup-winning coach, Barry Trotz.

2019 NBA Playoffs: Kyrie Irving dazzles, Jayson Tatum closes as Celtics take 2-0 series lead against Pacers - CBS Sports

Using a big run to erase a 12-point fourth-quarter deficit, the Boston Celtics took a 2-0 series lead over the Indiana Pacers on Wednesday night with a 99-91 Game 2 home victory. It was definitely a defensive game, but nowhere near the 84-74 slugfest the teams played in the opener on Saturday.

Boston was led by Kyrie Irving, who scored a game-high 37 points on 15-for-26 shooting, including 6-for-10 3-pointers, while handing out seven assists. Jayson Tatum added 26 points, including some clutch late buckets to help seal the win for Boston.

Indiana had four players in double figures, led by Bojan Bojanovic's 23 points on 4-of-8 3-point shooting, but the Pacers once again struggled to put the ball in the basket when it mattered most.

Here are a few takeaways from Boston's Game 2 win.

Kyrie, Kyrie, Kyrie

Irving is one of the best scorers in the NBA, and his full arsenal was on display during Wednesday's Game 2. Irving had pretty much every facet of his offensive game working, hitting 3-pointers, mid-range pull-ups, and finishing at the rim. With his team trailing by four in the fourth quarter, Irving checked in at the 7:35 mark and proceeded to knock down two 3-pointers to give Boston the lead and all the momentum.

Big plays by Tatum

The Pacers wisely began to force the ball out of Irving's hands late, which left it up to other Celtics to step up and close out the game. Tatum answered the bell, hitting a huge corner 3 in transition to give the Celtics the lead, then finding Gordon Hayward under the basket for a wide-open layup to make it a 3-point game with 12.1 seconds left to play. He also sealed the win with a soaring and-one dunk to give Boston a 2-0 series lead. There's been some talk about Tatum's progression being stymied a bit this season, but his performance late in Game 2 shows he's capable of being a big-time playoff presence for Boston.

Ice-cold Pacers

After struggling offensively for much of Game 1, the Pacers looked much better on Wednesday night. But, when crunch time hit in the fourth quarter and Boston ramped up its defensive intensity, Indiana simply couldn't buy a bucket. Most of their looks were well defended, but they went freezing cold as the Celtics went on a 16-0 run, during which they took a late fourth-quarter lead. Eventually the run was broken by a Wesley Matthews 3-pointer, but never was Victor Oladipo's absence more noticeable than when the Pacers desperately needed a bucket down the stretch, and seemingly had nowhere to turn.

Don't sleep on Bojan

He may not be a household name, but Bojan Bogdanovic has had an excellent year for the Pacers. He was already one of the best 3-point shooters in the NBA, but was thrust into much more of a playmaking role as Indiana's leading scorer following the Oladipo injury. He was fantastic on Wednesday night, nearly pushing the Pacers to victory with two big 3-pointers late in the fourth, but ultimately they fell short.

Cardinals Can't and Won't Pass on QB Kyler Murray at No. 1 in 2019 NFL Draft - Bleacher Report NFL

File - In this Oct. 27, 2018, file photo, Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray maneuvers during the team's NCAA college football game against Kansas State in Norman, Okla. The Oakland Athletics remain hopeful of seeing Heisman Trophy winner Murray in their baseball uniform when spring training begins next month. The Arizona Cardinals aren't fooling anyone by saying they don't know where the organization stands with the first overall pick.

"We are not done with this process," general manager Steve Keim said, per Pro Football Talk's Michael David Smith. "We have not made a decision on the first overall pick. There are a number of players in my opinion, and our scouts' opinion, and our coaching staff's opinion, that warrant being the first overall selection."

Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray is the correct choice. Every other option is wrong, because an organization doesn't pass on a projected franchise signal-caller if the position isn't settled. And the position is not settled in Arizona despite Josh Rosen being last year's 10th overall pick. Rosen is a talented young option, but Murray is a superior prospect with better ties to the regime's current setup.

To Keim's point, yes, a number of players are worthy of consideration. Ohio State's Nick Bosa, Alabama's Quinnen Williams and Kentucky's Josh Allen are potential defensive cornerstones. The Cardinals scheduled visits with Bosa and Williams, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero

Of course, the team met with Murray and his agent, Erik Burkhardt, last week, per ESPN's Adam Schefter. Keim pushed back against the report since the agent's presence seemingly indicates the Cardinals are already sold on the reigning Heisman Trophy winner as the first overall pick and ready to negotiate. The general manager called the report "false," per Darren Urban of the team's official site.

"The fact that I don't know what we're doing but everybody else does? That's concerning," Keim said, per Kyle Odegard of the Cardinals' site.

Keim may not know who will sit upon the Iron Throne once Game of Thrones comes to an end, but he certainly has an inkling of what he plans to do with the first selection. The gamesmanship is unnecessary. Other organizations already have an idea of what Arizona is doing, especially after Murray canceled a predraft visit this week with the Washington Redskins, per the NFL Network's Steve Wyche

A year ago, quarterback Baker Mayfield famously told his agent, "I'm not going later than [the fifth overall pick]."

The Cleveland Browns made Mayfield the first pick in the 2018 draft.

DALLAS, TX - OCTOBER 14: Baker Mayfield #6 of the Oklahoma Sooners and Kyler Murray #1 of the Oklahoma Sooners warm up before the game against the Texas Longhorns at Cotton Bowl on October 14, 2017 in Dallas, Texas. (Photo by Richard Rodriguez/Getty Ima
Richard Rodriguez/Getty Images

Washington currently owns the 15th overall pick, and Murray is arguably the draft class' top talent. His rise runs parallel with the one Mayfield experienced. Neither former Oklahoma quarterback was seen as the No. 1 overall pick during the season despite Heisman Trophy-winning seasons. Both are considered outliers because of their size. Yet, evaluators couldn't deny their skill sets upon closer inspection.

The public perception didn't necessarily reflect team-by-team realitieswhich is exactly why it's easy to call Keim out for his earlier falsehood. Browns general manager John Dorsey knew exactly who he wanted with the first overall pick six months before Cleveland made its selection.

"On the record, he knew in October," The MMQB's Albert Breer said during an appearance on 92.3 The Fan's Bull and Fox (via WKYC's Matthew Florjancic). "He knew in October that Baker Mayfield was going to be the best player in the next year's draft, which is interesting to me because I don't think there were a ton of people that saw him that way.

"I think a lot of people still looked at him with curiosity, 'Is this guy a product of the Oklahoma system and the air raid? Is he too short?' All those questions were there, and I just thought it was interesting because Dorsey had so much conviction on the guy, and obviously, we see now that conviction was pretty well-founded."

Obviously, the situation is a little different because a lot of the Murray hype is built on one major factor: Kliff Kingsbury being hired as the Cardinals' new head coach.

"Kyler is a freak," the former Texas Tech coach said six months ago, per KAMC's Eric Kelly. "... I just think the world of him and what he can do on the football field.

"I've never seen him have a poor outing. Not one. Which, at quarterback, is impossible to do, but he's done it. I'd take him with the first pick of the draft if I could."

Brad Tollefson/Associated Press

Keim couldn't have been sold on the two-sport star that early in the process, because he had no way of knowing Kingsbury would become the team's next head coach after only one year of Steve Wilks. Besides, Murray didn't make his intention to concentrate on football clear until February.

But the idea a general manager doesn't know what he plans to do a week before the draft even as he weighs all options is nonsense. Keim should listen to other franchises interested in the top pick. That's part of the job. However, there is no offer that could sway a team from acquiring a landscape-shifting quarterback prospect.

Murray is deserving of the selection, too. His standing isn't simply based on Kingsbury's wishes and scheme fit. This isn't a case where a team falls in love with a prospect and overdrafts him. Murray is the complete package, even if he's smaller than ideal.

The 5'10", 207-pound signal-caller delivers the football accurately to all three levels of the field, consistently works beyond his first read and excels from the pocket.

The first-team All-American finished first in the draft class with a 96.6 quarterback rating on passes 10-plus yards downfield, per Pro Football Focus. His accuracy actually increased from 59.8 percent on open 10-plus-yard throws to 61.4 percent for open 20-plus-yard throws, according to PFF

The idea Murray is another athletic run-first quarterback is ridiculously misinformed. According to Pro Football Focus' Sam Monson, the 1,000-yard rusher finished first overall in the nation with 12.3 yards per pass attempt and a 138.6 quarterback rating when working from the pocket. His adjusted completion percentage of 75.7 ranked seventh overall.

Like any quarterback under 6'4", Murray must find throwing lanes. At Oklahoma, he played behind a massive front with four blockers expected to be drafted next weekend. Defenders batted only five of Murray's passes, which tied for the least among the top four quarterback prospects, per NFL Research

Sue Ogrocki/Associated Press

Scheme is less of a factor after the success Mayfield experienced as a rookie and Kingsbury's background as an air raid disciple. Even so, Murray received a 90 grade for his passing from PFF when he worked beyond his initial read. The undersized gunslinger displays an innate feel for working the pocket and creating downfield opportunities.

Once his raw throwing ability and dynamism as a runner are factored into the equation, everything points toward Murray being an elite talent, even if the Cardinals didn't sit atop the draft order.

But they do.

An argument can be made Arizona lacks a quality roster and shouldn't waste another premium pick on a quarterback prospect. Rosen struggled mightily as a rookie because he didn't have the talent around him to make his life easier, but this doesn't apply to Murray because he's not just a distributor; he's a playmaker in both phases.

Also, the Cardinals approached the offseason aggressively, adding right tackle Marcus Gilbert, guard J.R. Sweezy, tight end Charles Clay and wide receivers Kevin White and Damiere Byrd along with a slew of defensive free agents. The roster, as a whole, is much improved.

Months of preparation doesn't disappear once the team is on the clock. Arizona is already sold on Murray as its future franchise quarterback.

"I've heard since the combine, resolutely, staunchly, that they are all in on Kyler Murray," CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora reported earlier this week.

Murray doesn't come up short in any meaningful area, which makes him the absolute right choice for the Cardinals, even if they're not willing to admit it publicly...yet.

Winners and losers from the NFL's 2019 schedule release - USA TODAY

After sifting through tens of thousands of options — distilled by supercomputers from what could be almost infinite combinations — the NFL revealed the highly anticipated schedule for its 100th season Wednesday evening.

Who has reason to rejoice and who might wish the league had allowed those servers and the scheduling honchos more time to find an ideal 256-game itinerary? Read on ...

WINNERS

Tradition: The NFL made the correct call, kicking off its celebration of a football century by featuring its longest-running rivalry, Packers-Bears, for the 199th time in the regular-season opener. Letting Chicago, longtime home of George "Papa Bear" Halas, host was also a nice touch. (Now if only we could still see Soldier Field's iconic columns from field level ...)

Jason Garrett: Feels like a hot seat kinda season for Dallas' coach, who's never guided the Cowboys to the postseason in successive years. But the first three games for America's Team (and five of the first six) are against non-playoff opponents — a pretty good opportunity to build some early momentum for the potentially embattled Garrett.

Lamar Jackson: Baltimore's second-year quarterback will open a season as the starter for the first time ... and face the four worst defenses (Miami, Cleveland, Kansas City, Cincinnati) from 2018 over the first six weeks.

Bills' early Christmas shopping: Buffalo's players basically won't lose sight of New York in September, opening with two games just outside New York City — stock up for the kids now, fellas — against the Jets and Giants before hosting the Bengals and Patriots.

Browns' weekend shopping: Four prime-time games! What will Cleveland players and fans do with all of this newly granted free time on Sunday afternoons at 1 p.m.?

Shared spotlight: Good to see almost every team (sorry, Bills) get at least one prime-time date. Even I want to see the Dolphins ... once.

Mexico: A torn-up field at Estadio Azteca forced our neighbors to the south to surrender Chiefs-Rams last season, a game that turned out to be one of the most memorable regular-season shootouts ever. But the NFL will export Chiefs-Chargers — they also provided a dramatic contest late last season — Nov. 18 in a showdown of clubs that shared the AFC's best record (12-4) in 2018.

History: To further tout the centennial season, the league has designated an "NFL100 Game of the Week" throughout the season in order to provide, according to its news release, "a nod to a momentous game played, a fierce rivalry that spans decades, a matchup of original teams and/or a game in which history was made."

Patriots: This worked out pretty well. The champs open with eight consecutive tilts against teams that didn't reach the playoffs last season. They'll also get to limit travel expenses, leaving the Eastern time zone just once, a Week 13 trip to Houston.

LOSERS

Patriots fans: Yeah, it's nice getting Pack-Monsters off the top in the name of the season-long birthday party for the rest of us, but kinda blows for the New England faithful. That Thursday night opener, usually reserved as a home game for the reigning Super Bowl champs, sure is a nice way for the locals to get a jump on their weekend before watching how their fantasy teams debut from the comfort of the couch (or preferred watering hole).

Patriots fans ... again: Oh yeah, the NFL is trolling you with an "NFL100" game ... in Foxborough ... against Eli Manning and the Giants on Oct. 10.

History lessons: Some rather oddball choices for those NFL100 designees. Wouldn't it have been better to open the 50th season of "Monday Night Football" with Jets-Browns, the inaugural "MNF" matchup back in 1970, rather than delay it to Week 2? In Week 3, we get a celebration of Super Bowl VI between Dallas and Miami — easily one of the worst Super Bowls ever — rather than the Broncos-Packers matchup 26 years later or the Rams' return to Cleveland, their original home? And Week 5's NFL100 tag doesn't go to Packers-Cowboys — remember that Ice Bowl thing? — instead affixing to Bills-Titans, even though we're still not really sure the Music City Miracle was legit. I could go on ...

Saints: They get a Super Bowl-caliber schedule without the benefit of having actually played in the Super Bowl ... which history will forever remember they should have. Two September home games against Texas playoff teams bookend West Coast trips to visit the Rams and Seahawks. (And doesn't the controversial NFC Championship Game rematch in Week 2 feel a touch early?)

Brian Flores: Welcome to the big headset. Miami's rookie head coach comes out of the chute against the Ravens, Patriots, Cowboys and Chargers, all 2018 playoff teams.

Jimmy Garoppolo: Hope that surgically repaired knee is feeling 100%, buddy, because the NFL will be putting you on two lengthy plane trips (Tampa and Cincinnati) to begin your comeback.

Iggles: Philly is the only team that has to play three straight on the road (Weeks 6-8), part of a stretch that includes one game at Lincoln Financial Field over a six-week period.

Aaron Rodgers and Matt LaFleur: The mind meld between Green Bay's new brain trust will be tested immediately by a murderer's row of defenses: Chicago, Minnesota, Denver, Philadelphia and Dallas. And don't think Mike McCarthy won't be watching.

NFL Network: The league-owned outlet again gets the table scraps, forced to promote some of those mandatory prime-time appearances. Titans-Jags, Texans-Jags and two helpings of Bucs-Panthers will all be shown exclusively on NFLN. Appointment viewing ... in the Sun Belt anyway.

Thanksgiving leftovers? Uh, we had Bears-Lions and Falcons-Saints last year, too, though the venue for the latter game has switched from New Orleans to Atlanta. And Bills-Cowboys for the main course? Really? You couldn't have cross-flexed us a fresh turkey, NFL? Not sure these Buffalo wings are going to hit the spot.

Oakland: So let's recap — a city losing its beloved franchise to Las Vegas following the season also has to surrender a home date to London, and that just happens to be a matchup with the Bears that will prevent the Black Hole faithful from paying their respects to departed friend Khalil Mack, whom they never got to properly see off in 2018. Oh, that London game Oct. 6 also means the Raiders will play once in Oakland during a 42-day span that encompasses the entire month of October. And rather than let the Silver & Black wind down its home slate against one of its decades-long AFC West foes, the Raiders are scheduled to bid the city adieu with meh matchups against Tennessee and Jacksonville in Weeks 14 and 15, respectively. This is just wrong. Here's hoping Jon Gruden leads a surprise charge to an AFC West crown, leading to the Raiders hosting Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs in the playoffs.
