Rockets showcase what they must: Lockdown D - ESPN

HOUSTON -- The desperate 36-footer by Donovan Mitchell sailed over the backboard in a miserable moment that epitomized the Utah Jazz's offensive woes in their 122-90 Game 1 loss to the Houston Rockets on Sunday.

Mitchell had no choice but to toss up a prayer after receiving a pass so far from the basket just before the expiration of the shot clock, which was pelted with the errant shot. The Rockets' aggressive defense had snuffed out every action the Jazz attempted on the possession. That was a theme throughout the night.

"Their physicality defensively disrupted us," Jazz coach Quin Snyder said. "The ball stopped and got stuck on one side of the floor. We just have to be more determined in those situations."

The Rockets held the Jazz to 39 percent shooting from the floor (7-of-27 from 3-point range) and forced 18 turnovers in the rout. It was the kind of dominant defensive performance that gives the Rockets, a historically elite offensive team, confidence that they are legitimate title contenders.

"It doesn't surprise me that we can defend," Rockets coach Mike D'Antoni said. "At all."

Houston, one of the NBA's worst defensive teams during the first half of the season, has excelled on that end since the All-Star break. Only Utah ranked above Houston in defensive efficiency since the All-Star break, as the Rockets allowed only 105.3 points per possession in that span, a major factor in their league-best 20-5 finish.

"That's what we have to do," said Rockets superstar James Harden, who had game highs of 29 points and 10 assists. "That's how we have to play defensively. We have to be aggressive. We have to disrupt their routes and their plays and things they like to do and make sure that they're not comfortable. If we don't do that, we don't have a chance. Defensively, we've been locked in these last couple of months."

Reserve guard Austin Rivers raised some eyebrows after a March 28 rout of the Denver Nuggets when he declared that the Rockets would win a championship if they continued to play elite defense. That's a belief held throughout the Houston locker room.

"That's something that we always emphasize," said forward PJ Tucker, the Rockets' best defender. "When we're aggressive as a team, our defense goes to another level. We're being physical on box-offs, on all the switches, and we're being aggressive and getting up into people, making them drive. When you do that, it puts pressure on the offense to try to make the right plays."

The Jazz repeatedly made poor decisions under duress or had to settle for low-percentage shots in Game 1. With Eric Gordon as his primary defender, Utah go-to guy Donovan Mitchell had a particularly tough night, finishing with 19 points on 7-of-18 shooting with no assists and five turnovers.

"It's one game, and you have to learn from it, but I can't have no assists and five turnovers," Mitchell said. "I don't care how many minutes you play or whatever. If you get five turnovers, you have to look at yourself in the mirror and figure out how to adjust."

UFC 236 post-event facts: Israel Adesanya sets title-fight record for most knockdowns - MMAjunkie

The UFC returned to Atlanta after nearly two years on Saturday with a pay-per-view event from State Farm Arena that saw two new interim champions crowned.

In the main event, Dustin Poirier (25-5 MMA, 17-4 UFC) finally realized his fighting dream when he captured the interim lightweight title with a gutsy unanimous decision victory over featherweight champion Max Holloway (20-4 MMA, 16-4 UFC) in a rematch of a February 2012 bout, which “The Diamond” won by submission.

The co-headliner saw Israel Adesanya (17-0 MMA, 6-0 UFC) join the short list of undefeated UFC champions when he overcame Kelvin Gastelum (15-4 MMA, 10-4 UFC) by unanimous decision in a classic five-round affair to win the interim middleweight title.

Plenty of historic numbers came out of the two title fights, but the card provided some other noteworthy feats, as well. For more, check below for 45 post-event facts from UFC 236.

Tiger Woods delivers for himself, gold, and America - Washington Examiner

It was an extraordinary performance made more so for what, to Tiger Woods, must have seemed like an increasingly suffocating atmosphere of growing expectation. Could he really do it?

Yes, yes he could.

Winning his fifth Masters on Sunday, Woods thus also secured his fifteenth win of a major. It was his first in 11 years. The beauty of Woods' performance in Augusta, Ga. is made more special by its uniquely American character.

Because it's a story of redemption — of a player who just a few years ago seemed like he might not ever win a major again, and whom some foolish souls ruled out. While the media speculation and whispering has occasionally gotten to Woods since 2008, he has never allowed it to triumph over him. Offering a greater engagement with his fans but maintaining consistent in his desire for privacy, Woods kept his focus tight and his swing loose, simply playing the game. The hard work has paid off.

We just saw that in Woods' performance over the past four days: calm, relentless, and ruthless. When the time came on Sunday, Woods surged forwards, imitated the tiger, and seized his prey — another glorious green jacket. Francesco Molinari played with superb skill, but this weekend, neither he nor anyone else was good enough.

Popular opinion and capitalism will join together to drive the game of golf and Tiger's own fortune to even greater heights. How many more majors can Tiger now win? The man who changed the green jacket and golf forever has once again delivered his chosen game a majestic new chapter.

2019 Masters green jacket ceremony canceled, presentation moved indoors amid weather concerns - CBS Sports

There will be no Masters green jacket ceremony on the Augusta National course at the conclusion of Round 4 on Sunday. Due to inclement weather expected in the afternoon, the iconic post-round celebration of the Masters winner has been nixed in part because officials want to expedite gate closures.

"There will not be a Green Jacket Ceremony on the terrace putting green this afternoon in order to expedite gate closures," explained Augusta National in a statement. "Weather permitting, we will have photos with the champion on the putting green following the Butler Cabin Green Jacket presentation."

Weather concerns have already played a huge role in how Sunday's final round is developing with tee times pushed up to start at 7:30 a.m. ET and players sent off in threesomes at split tees. Time will tell if the move will allow golfers to finish their final round.

As tradition goes at the green jacket ceremony, the winner of last year's Masters -- in this case, Patrick Reed -- will bestow the newest green jacket onto the back of this year's winner. If we have a Monday finish, which hasn't happened since 1983, it's possible the ceremony will be reinstalled, weather permitting.

Tiger Woods wins Masters for first time since 2005 - Fox News

It was a Sunday unlike any other at this tradition unlike any other.

But as he had on four previous Sunday afternoons at Augusta National Golf Club, Tiger Woods stood alone at the top.

Woods, 43, shot a 2-under par 70 to win his first green jacket since 2005 and his first major since the 2008 U.S. Open. He defeated Dustin Johnson, Xander Schauffle, and Brooks Koepeka by one stroke, but that does not begin to tell the story of a dramatic Sunday that ended approximately four-and-a-half hours early after Sunday's tee times were moved ahead due to the threat of severe weather.

Woods began the day in a tie for second with Tony Finau, two shots back of Francesco Molinari, the defending British Open champion with nerves so steady that entering Sunday, the Italian had not bogeyed any hole since the 11th on Thursday.

But Molinari's nerves and shotmaking skills failed him on the back nine Sunday. Holding a two-shot lead on the 12th teen, Molinari watched helplessly as his tee shot rolled off the green and into Rae's Creek. His double bogey was not enough to drop him from contention, but the veneer of invincibility had cracked.

If what happened at 12 was tragedy, what happened to Molinari at 15 was a farce. Playing conservatively to avoid the water on the par-5, Molinari found himself with what should have been a simple third shot onto the green. But he hit his wedge shot fat, popping it up into the air, off a nearby tree and into the water. He double-bogeyed the hole to drop out of a share of the lead.

On the same hole, Woods made a conventional birdie-4 to take the outright lead for the first time. He secured his advantage at the par-3 16 by sticking an 8-iron within 2 feet of the cup for another birdie and a two-stroke lead.

That birdie, along with a missed birdie by Koepka on 18, gave Tiger the cushion he needed to finish with a bogey-5 and secure his fifth green jacket and 15th major, trailing only the great Jack Nicklaus in both categories.
