Zags' Perkins rues 'boneheaded' tech late in loss - ESPN

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Gonzaga guard Josh Perkins said he'll never forget his late technical foul in Saturday night's 75-69 loss to Texas Tech in the Elite Eight.

Gonzaga was down 71-69 with 11 seconds to play at the Honda Center when Perkins reached across the baseline and swatted the ball from Red Raiders guard Matt Mooney, who was attempting an inbounds pass.

Perkins was in violation of NCAA Rule 7, Section 6, Article 9b, which states, "No opponent of the thrower-in shall have any part of his person over the inside plane of the boundary line."

Davide Moretti made both free throws after Perkins was given a technical foul.

Texas Tech retained possession, and Red Raiders guard Jarrett Culver made both free throws after he was fouled by Jeremy Jones, extending the Red Raiders' lead to 75-69.

"He was ball-faking a lot," Perkins said about Mooney's throw-in. "I thought he ball-faked right in front of me and, I guess, instinctually, I just reached at it. Bonehead play. [It's] something I'll think about forever. Unfortunately, that happened."

Mark Few, however, focused on the positive with Perkins and his contributions to the program over his successful career.

"I mean, we can write a book on Perk and Perk and I, but listen: The amount of growth that has occurred during his five years in our program and every facet of his life is kinda what coaching is all about and what playing college basketball is all about," the Gonzaga coach said after the game. "He's a much more mature player, a much better player now, and we've been an incredible program and had an incredible run with him at the helm."

Knockout! Watch Justin Gaethje steamroll Edson Barboza in the first round at UFC Philadelphia - MMA Mania

The lightweight main event between Justin Gaethje and Edson Barboza earlier tonight (Sat., Mar. 30, 2019) at UFC on ESPN 2 from inside Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was all it was cracked up to be as Gatehje knocked out Barboza in the very first round.

While Barboza landed some good leg kicks and timely counters, Gaethje dominated this fight from the opening bell. He landed the better kicks in the beginning moments before hurting Barboza with a big combination. Barboza survived the early damage before “Highlight” caught him clean with a vicious right hand along the cage. Barboza hit the canvas, his lights turned off, and that was all she wrote.

Check out the knockout blow above courtesy of UFC/ESPN.

With this performance, Gaethje locks down his second-straight knockout win at 155 pounds after taking out James Vick in the first round last August. Gaethje once again delivered on his promise and now looks to be ready to make a run at the lightweight title. UFC loves fighters who can produce instant fireworks no matter who they face so “Highlight” could get a nice push moving forward.

Tiger out of Match Play after missing 4-foot putt - ESPN

AUSTIN, Texas -- Tiger Woods lost his quarterfinal match to Denmark's Lucas Bjerregaard at the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play on Saturday when he bogeyed the 18th hole, missing a 4-footer for par to lose 1 down.

Woods had a 2-up lead through six holes but lost the seventh and 10th to go back to even before forging ahead at the 11th when Bjerregaard bogeyed. Both players birdied the 12th and 13th holes, but it was a 30-foot eagle putt at the 15th for the Dane that tied the match.

At the par-3 17th, both players birdied, sending the match to the 18th, where they each pounded drives down the right side and into the rough.

And that's where Woods made a costly mistake. His flop from the rough came up short and in the bunker, with Bjerregaard hitting his approach to 16 feet from a similar distance. Bjerregaard missed the birdie putt, but Woods failed to make the 4-footer for par, ending his tournament.

"We read it inside left, left center, and the putt went left," Woods said of the miss. "I went back and hit it again, and it did the same thing. Just one of those weird spots.''

Asked if this is where he wants to be heading into the Masters in two weeks, Woods said, "No, I'm not. I wanted to play tomorrow. This is going to sting for a few days, and I'll get back after it after that."

Earlier in the day, Woods prevailed 2 and 1 over Rory McIlroy at Austin Country Club to advance to the afternoon quarterfinal.

Woods had no trouble keeping up with McIlroy off the tee in the early going, and he built a 2-up lead with birdies at the fifth and sixth holes, then was gifted the 10th when McIlroy missed a 3-footer.

But McIlroy turned things around with his own birdies at the 12th and 13th holes, then appeared in prime position to tie the match at the par-5 16th.

With Woods having to play out sideways from a fairway bunker, then hitting his third on the green to 25 feet, McIlroy was in the fairway after bombing his tee shot 395 yards. He had just 173 yards left, requiring perhaps as little as a 9-iron, but he flared it to the right and found himself with an awkward stance, the ball just outside a bunker, his feet in it.

He was only about 100 feet from the hole, but McIlroy pitched long, over the green, and with spectators scurrying out of the way, the ball came to rest against a wooden bulkhead. After considering a drop, McIlroy took an unplayable lie, had to return to the original spot, found the front bunker and then blasted out -- before conceding. Woods never even hit a putt.

Woods ended the match after McIlroy nearly holed a long birdie putt at the 17th.

Woods had not made it this far in the tournament since 2008, the last of his three victories.

Coach K -- NCAA not ready for 1-and-done change - ESPN

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski called for the NCAA to take active steps to work with the NBA and federal legislators to formulate a new model for college basketball to address eligibility and compensation for players.

Asked about the eventual abolishment of the one-and-done rule, Krzyzewski took the discussion further, suggesting the NCAA has failed to be proactive in addressing obvious pitfalls that will come with the eventual rule change.

"The NBA will be well prepared," Krzyzewski said. "The NCAA is not prepared right now. They need to be in concert with the NBA in developing a plan that is specific for men's college basketball. And that should include what an athlete gets, how he's been taken care of, whether or not there's a reentry if something -- really, it's deep. And if we only look at it shallow, then we're doing a disservice to the kids."

Krzyzewski has enjoyed the fruits of the current one-and-done model, including this year's team which features four star freshmen who might have otherwise been able to move immediately to the NBA, led by superstar Zion Williamson.

Williamson has been at the center of discussion about amateurism and potential compensation for college athletes. In February, Williamson's Nike sneaker tore early in a game vs. North Carolina, and he missed the next month of action, with critics noting that he was not paid by Nike, was not compensated fairly by Duke and would be wise to simply sit out the rest of the season.

Williamson eventually returned, but Krzyzewski said it's clear that his star freshman is going to be the face of inevitable change for college basketball.

"He got hurt, and then all of a sudden, everything that had to do with college basketball had Zion's face on it," Krzyzewski said.

For his part, Williamson has downplayed the issue, saying that he knew the system when he arrived and he's not interested in fighting it.

"As my mom taught me, control the things I can control. I don't focus on the things I can't control. That's the world, man. I can't worry about," WIlliamson said when addressing the issue after Duke's first round win over North Dakota State.

Federal legislators have different ideas, however. Earlier this month, North Carolina congressman Mark Walker introduced legislation that would allow for college athletes to profit off their names and likenesses, and last week, Connecticut senator Chris Murphy cited Williamson's situation in releasing a report deriding the current amateurism model and calling for compensation to players, suggesting it was an "issue of civil rights."

Krzyzewski said he was happy to have federal lawmakers involved, but reiterated that finding a successful model would require all groups to work together with a clear vision -- something he's not seen thus far.

"I'd love for a group to talk to those gentlemen who are in federal government," Krzyzewski said. "That's not being done. So the right fielder's saying something to left fielder. Like, let's get into the clubhouse and do it as a team. The kids deserve it.

"And in this time the definition of amateurism -- it's outdated. We need a new model. And with all these things that are changing, it cries out for coordination of creating this new model. If we don't do it, our game's going to suffer."
