Duke's Reddish hobbled by knee, misses victory - ESPN

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Duke learned in warm-ups Friday that it would be without star freshman Cam Reddish, then relied on a host of supporting players to overcome Virginia Tech 77-75 to advance to the Elite Eight.

Reddish told coaches his knee was bothering him before warm-ups, and Mike Krzyzewski said he was walking with a limp. There was some discussion on whether he would play, but he ultimately decided against it.

"I talked to him before the game, and he was skeptical about whether he wanted to play," Zion Williamson said afterward. "I was like, 'If you can't go out there and play, you won't be letting us down.'"

Williamson said he could tell from Reddish's demeanor pregame that the knee was seriously bothering him, though Krzyzewski offered little context on the severity of the injury or the cause.

"We've prepared all week with that lineup," Krzyzewski said. "And then, boom, right before the start of the game [Reddish] can't play."

Krzyzewski offered no update on Reddish's availability for Sunday's game against Michigan State with a Final Four bid at stake.

Reddish was in uniform, and Duke originally listed him among the starters, but sophomore guard Alex O'Connell took his place in a new lineup announced shortly before introductions.

Reddish is a projected lottery pick in this year's NBA draft and entered the game averaging 13.6 points and 3.7 rebounds.

It's the latest in a run of injuries for Duke, including a long stretch at season's end without Williamson. The adversity, Krzyzewski said, has helped define this team.

"They've never backed down; they've never been afraid the whole year," Krzyzewski said. "And we played this amazing schedule. And the spotlight's on these kids from day one to now. So to have that on them and still respond the way they do, it's really terrific for these kids."

The confidence has carried over through a series of close calls. Duke narrowly escaped North Carolina in the ACC tournament, then needed a last-second miss by UCF to advance to the Sweet 16. Friday's final play was even more astounding given how well Virginia Tech executed the play.

"[Ahmed] Hill kind of did a loop, and I'm not even going to lie to you, when he caught it, I said, 'Ah, we're about to go to overtime,'" Williamson said. "I mean I don't know what happened."

RJ Barrett interjected: "He missed."

And that about summed it up. There was no real explanation for how the Hokies failed to connect on the final shot, or how Duke has continued to survive in spite of injuries and close calls.

So, perhaps they're a team of destiny?

"I don't really believe in that," Krzyzewski said. "I believe we just play hard until the end."

Williamson concurred, though he admitted he was more concerned about providing bulletin-board material for Michigan State.

"I can't say we're destined to be in the championship because that'll give somebody else fuel," Williamson said. "So whoever wants it more, I think that's who wins."

Key three: Duke men's basketball aims for second straight Elite Eight appearance - Duke Chronicle

Following a scare in the second round against Central Florida, Duke men’s basketball will face a familiar foe in Virginia Tech, a team that beat them in late February, albeit without Zion Williamson. The Blue Zone gives you three keys on how the Blue Devils can avenge their loss and reach the halfway point to a championship:

Attack the paint early

Although Duke is the worst power conference team in terms of 3-point shooting, an average viewer sure wouldn’t expect it, given the amount of deep balls that it shoots at the start of games. The Blue Devils are being given open looks by every opponent they face, and while they do have the capability to sometimes connect on a decent percentage, relying on outside shooting may mean their demise if they can’t simply rely on their staggering percentages from inside the arc.

Head coach Mike Krzyzewski knows that other teams will pack the paint against his team, but his young squad is content to take the open three, rather than work for a shot inside. In Duke’s three-game run to an ACC tournament championship, they shot less or the same amount of threes in the second period than they did the first, remembering their efficiency in the paint.

Yes, it will be harder to attack a congested lane, but points will come without a doubt, and falling behind early from too many 3-point attempts may end the ACC champions’ season in disappointment.

Big men, big defense

Last go-around against UCF, Marques Bolden and Javin DeLaurier looked like middle schoolers compared to 7-foot-6 giant Tacko Fall. Now with star guard Justin Robinson back from injury, the two Blue Devil bigs may now be the giants if forced to switch on the perimeter.

With Robinson back in the fold, he and sophomore Nickeil Alexander-Walker comprise one of the best back courts in the country. If Duke wants to limit their dominant pick and roll game with forward Kerry Blackshear Jr., who dropped 23 points in the first meeting, then Bolden and DeLaurier will have to have quick feet and switch onto the two Hokie guards.

The latter is most likely to succeed as a perimeter defender, but Bolden is the much superior offensive player, as shown by the 14 points he scored in Blacksburg, Va. The DeSoto, Texas native tallied 25 minutes in that game, compared to DeLaurier’s 26, but if Bolden can’t stay with Robinson and Alexander-Walker the big fella may be on the bench.

Get the key stop

So many times in an NCAA tournament game, a bucket at the right time can send a potential underdog into a rally that a favorite like Duke just can’t overcome. In the Round of 32, the Knights hit many of those shots, but the two that mattered, a botched alley oop and a tip-in that just rolled off the rim at the buzzer, eventually cost them.

With the Hokies ranking in the top ten nationally in 3-point percentage, it will be crucial for the Blue Devils to step up and contest those shots to keep momentum on their side. The Virginia Tech faithful will be very present with the regional played just outside Hokie country, as well as Michigan State and LSU fans desperate to not face Duke in the next round.

Despite the close call last weekend, March Madness isn’t a glamor show, it’s about who can survive and advance. If these young Blue Devils can seize the final moments of Friday’s game, then they’ll be recognized among the nation’s elite.

Tiger Woods played an incredible shot on his knees with his club the wrong way - AOL

  • Tiger Woods may have just played the most Tiger Woods shot of his career on Thursday.
  • The American found himself off the green on the 10th hole at the Austin Country Club, with his ball stuck in the bushes.
  • But he got on his knees, played with the club the wrong way around, and still hit the ball onto the green. He even made it look easy.
  • Woods then holed his putt to halve the hole in his WGC Match Play match against Brandt Snedeker.
  • Watch the incredible shot below.

Tiger Woods played an incredible shot on his knees with the club the wrong way around when his ball went in the bushes — but he still made the green and sank the putt to save face.

The miracle shot was taken when Woods found himself off-green on the 10th hole at the WGC Match Play competition at the Austin Country Club in Texas.

The American, a 14-time major champion in golf, is renowned for his extraordinary vision, technical quality, and incredibly clutch.

And he needed all of those skills to find his ball, play left-handed with the head of the club-face facing the wrong way, and make it look easy.

Woods not only found the green from an improbable position, but he also holed his putt and halved the hole against WGC Match Play opponent Brandt Snedeker.

Watch the shot right here:

Though Woods mastered the recovery shot, he was not able to rescue a victory against Snedeker and went on to lose his match.

As Woods beat Aaron Wise in his previous match, he is still able to progress into the final 16 bracket of the tournament providing he beats Patrick Cantlay and Snedeker fails to beat Wise.

The final group games take place on Friday. The first round and the quarter-finals of the final 16 take place on Saturday, before the semi-finals and final on Sunday.

Door closes a bit on Marshawn Lynch's return as Raiders add Isaiah Crowell; Brandon Marshall boosts LB corps - The Athletic

Raiders coach Jon Gruden said Tuesday that the door is always open for Marshawn Lynch. He didn’t say how open, and it definitely closed a little bit Thursday when the team signed running back Isaiah Crowell as a likely starter.

The door definitely closed on Doug Martin, who led the Raiders with 723 rushing yards last season. We reported Tuesday that the 30-year-old free agent was asking for a significant pay raise, and Gruden and general manager Mike Mayock then had Crowell in for a visit on Thursday.

Crowell, 26, signed a one-year deal worth up to $2.5 million. The Raiders also signed former Broncos linebacker Brandon Marshall to a one-year deal worth up to $4.1 million, league sources said.

Crowell averaged 4.8 yards a carry for the Jets, running for 685 yards and six touchdowns in 13 games last season. He spent the first four seasons of his career with the Browns and started all 32 games in 2016 and ’17 with Cleveland. Even without free...

2019 NCAA Tournament Round 4: Purdue vs. Virginia Preview - Hammer and Rails

Purdue is a game away from the Final Four.

The last time this happened was my sophomore year in West Lafayette. We beat Dayton, Oklahoma, and Gonzaga in a classic broken bracket to be the higher seed in the regional final in Albuquerque. We faced off against Wisconsin for the fourth time that year and lost 64-60. We had beaten them in West Lafayette, but lost to them in Madison, Chicago, and Albuquerque. It was a frustrating end to a surprising run and probably the closest Gene Keady came to a Final Four.

Now we get to play a pseudo-home game in Louisville instead of out west. There was a partisan crowd in the YM Center even with a lot of Tennessee fans in attendance. Now that their tickets have flooded the market I fully expect it to be Mackey South even with Virginia being the No. 1 seed.

NCAA Tournament History: 23 appearances, 1981 and 1984 Final Four

Coach: Tony Bennett (251-89 in 10th season at Virginia, 319-122 overall)

Tony Bennett and Matt Painter are generally regarded as two of the best coaches in America to have never made a Final Four. One will make it tomorrow night. Bennett has built Virginia into a regular season National power, but has struggled mightily in March. This is only his second Elite Eight and he has the black mark of the worst NCAA Tournament loss ever coming last year vs. UMBC. Still, this is his fourth season of 30 wins in the last six. He also has four ACC regular season titles in that span. As if it wasn’t enough of a bad sign, he was an assistant on that Wisconsin team coached by his dad that eliminated Purdue in its last Elite 8.

Simply put, Virginia is the best of the best. Their defense gets it done, allowing a miserly 55 points per game, three points better than the next best team (Michigan). Aside from two regular season losses to Duke they only lost to Florida State in the ACC Tournament. Their defense is like a boa constrictor, and I would liken them to a team Ryan Cline is very familiar with: Carmel High School. Carmel has won three class 4A state championships, including one a week ago, by playing stifling defense and making very few mistakes with the game on the line.

They seem like an overwhelming opponent unless you have a Duke level of raw talent. In commons opponents they beat Wisconsin by 7, Maryland by 5, Florida State by 13, Virginia Tech by 22 and 6, Notre Dame by 27 and 6, but later lost to Florida State by 10.

This is not a team that is going to beat itself. Even its offense is efficient as hell rating second on KenPom in adjusted offense only behind Gonzaga. They have a very specific system that functions with ruthless efficiency on both ends of the floor.

Indiana native Kyle Guy (15.1 ppg) and De’Andre Hunter (15.2 ppg) lead them in scoring along with Ty Jerome (13 ppg). Those three guards are ruthlessly efficient, all shooting over 40% from three. If you foul them, they are going to hit free throws and they won’t turn the ball over. Mamadi Diakite, Jacks Satl, and Jay Huff are their top post players, but this is not a team with a strong inside presence. They rebound as a team (Braxton Key leads them at 5.5 rebounds per game) and take care of the ball. If anything, they are super Purdue in that they are a bunch of interchangeable parts where eight games average four points or more per game.

That’s what really stands out to me. This team is just so damned efficient on both sides of the ball. Duke beat them 72-70 by grinding it out and prevailing with superior talent. They won game two by shooting 62% from three on the road. Florida State beat them by shooting 56% from the floor and dominating the glass.

Purdue needs to win this game by hitting threes and speeding them up a bit. They are a team that is dead last in tempo in KenPom (353 of 353). Purdue is slightly faster at 263. You saw in their Sweet 16 game with Oregon that they are not afraid to grind it out and play in the 50s. It does not bother them at all. The thing is, it doesn’t bother us, either.

Cline and Carsen Edwards need to stay hot from three. Cline was incredible against Tennessee and played the game of his career. Edwards personally dispatched the defending national champions in round 2. We need them to be on while Matt Haarms keeps up his good run. Let’s not discount Nojel Eastern and Aaron Wheeler, either.

This is a matchup of two teams that play a similar style. Both teams are going to be tough and fight for every inch of the floor. Purdue has the superstar in Edwards, however. He might be the difference.

The 2019 NFL Draft is less than a month away, and we're not much closer to figuring out whether the Arizona Cardinals, holders of the prized No. 1 pick, truly covet Heisman Trophy winner Kyler Murray more than their current quarterback Josh Rosen.

But in the wake of reports about other teams expressing interest in Rosen, who went 10th overall in 2018's draft, we've got a handful of splashy moves in this particular mock draft, including a trade of Rosen himself. From deals involving the Pittsburgh Steelers and New England Patriots to big QB decisions by both the Miami Dolphins and Washington Redskins, there's no shortage of possibilities to consider:
